Emotional intelligence (EI), or emotional leadership (EL), or emotional quotient (EQ), and emotional intelligence quotient (EIQ), is the capability of individuals to recognise their own emotions and those of others. It also is about the individual’s ability to discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior. Finally, that information is used to manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal(s).
Empathy is typically associated with EI. EI enables, it is thought, people to process emotional information and use it to navigate in a social situation. EI divides into four abilities: perceiving, using, understanding, and managing emotions
EI is a skillset that can be developed and if the relationship with others in the workplace, in school, or with their family is a major cause of stress for individuals, this suggests that there is work to be done.
