Change is often something that is imposed by necessity as families change, move home or a new school is required. The time pressures to respond to the new situation means that the expectation is that everyone will respond positively. This means that while the person who needed to make the change may feel positive about it, there is an assumption that everyone else in the family will too – but this may not be the case.
A family member may be ambivalent or have a negative reaction to change,. This may be result in increased withdrawal, behaviour change, emotional issues or other challenging outbursts or activities – at exactly the time when your family needs to maintain stability. Even one person verbalising negative feelings, can have an impact on the well being of the the rest of the family.
